UK air traffic outage: 2,000 flights cancelled after software glitch
A millisecond software defect in NATS caused widespread travel chaos, prompting calls for compensation and a review of airspace resilience.
A sudden software glitch in the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) system triggered a nationwide travel crisis on 8 September, forcing the cancellation of more than 2,000 flights and leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded. The fault, described by NATS as a “millisecond” defect that corrupted data, forced air traffic controllers to impose restrictions on UK airspace to maintain safety. The disruption spread across the country’s main airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Glasgow, and left many travellers sleeping on airport floors or stuck overseas.
The incident began at 10:00 a.m. and was not recognised as a serious problem until two and a half hours later. NATS did not restart its systems until just after 3:15 p.m., and restrictions on UK airspace were not lifted until 7:30 p.m. The delay in restoring full service compounded the chaos, as airlines struggled to re-schedule flights and crew, and the backlog of stranded passengers grew.
Reactions from industry and government were swift and critical. NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe declined to resign, calling the defect “very, very obscure” and emphasising that safety had never been compromised. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander branded the outage “completely unacceptable” and said a Civil Aviation Authority review was underway. Tim Alderslade, chief executive of Airlines UK, warned that passengers and airlines would bear the cost of a system failure that NATS faces no real consequences for, and demanded immediate compensation and a credible plan to improve resilience. Passenger stories, such as that of 26-year-old Addie Kitson who was diverted to Stockholm and incurred nearly £100 in unexpected expenses, highlighted the human toll and the perception that extraordinary-circumstance rules may not apply.
The September outage is the third major national air traffic incident in three years. In August 2023, a computer shutdown over the bank holiday weekend disrupted 700,000 passengers, while a smaller 2025 outage caused 150 cancellations. These repeated failures raise questions about the robustness of NATS’s infrastructure and the adequacy of its testing protocols, despite the company’s claim that it has “tested these systems so much.”
Looking ahead, the industry faces a critical juncture. NATS must demonstrate that it can prevent similar millisecond-level defects, while airlines and regulators will likely push for stronger accountability and clearer compensation pathways for passengers. The outcome of the ongoing Civil Aviation Authority review will shape the regulatory framework for air traffic control resilience and could set new standards for how national airspace systems are monitored and maintained.
